Tell us why you became a teacher

I love history and this allows me to share that passion with my students and hopefully make it come to life for them so they can understand how connected we are globally and why that is so because of how the past has shaped the world and the lives in it. I had many wonderful teachers throughout my schooling, but my high school World History teacher and my college history professor/advisor were game changers. They did not just teach content, they told stories and made it relevant---inspirational!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

While teaching about child labor during the Industrial Revolution, my students were horrified by the long hours and harsh conditions. Many imagined themselves or their siblings in factories. One student, new to the U.S., had worked in fields in Guatemala without schooling. He was surprised his peers did not realize child labor still exists. His perspective was eye-opening and heart-wrenching for us all.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My school is fortunate technology-wise, so I would invest in areas where students could benefit the most including 1) hands-on learning and STEM materials, 2) equitable supports and materials for our multi-lingual learners and their teachers, and 3) field trips and real-world experiences. These areas will help students learn, grow, feel supported, gain opportunities, and create lasting memories.
