Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to be a difference maker. Growing up an inner city kid, you didn't have positive role models in the community that gave you hope for your future. In school, I didn't have teachers that looked like me, or walked in my shoes. I did however have a few caring teachers that believed in me. I have overcome obstacles and paved my own path to success. I want to be a role model, outlet and reminder to my students that it is not where you are from, but where you are going.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was my first year teaching. Being a new teacher I felt like I had no idea what I was doing or if my teaching style was productive. This feeling went on for a good majority of the year, often asking for guidance and reassurance. It was not until state testing, where students immediately after testing were so happy to tell me, "that test was easy, everything you taught us this year was on it!" It was my students who then instilled confidence in me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000 I would save a portion, use a portion to pay off student loans and use the remaining money to start a girls basketball training program. The basketball program is important to me, as It plays a big part of my life and has contributed to who I am today. Women's/girls sports do not receive as much resources or funding as their counterparts. I would love to be able to foster a safe space for girls to learn & grow in the sport, while offering resources & creating opportunities
