Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always loved being around children! When I was younger I would take care of my younger cousins and I loved doing activities with them. As I got older, I found myself wanting to help the younger children in the neighborhood and at the school I attended. I always felt so much joy watching them gleam with excitement when they learned something new or when they finally conquered a challenging task. I knew I wanted to continue teaching young children then. I wanted to make a difference.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

We have all had a student that challenges us. Finding what teaching method works for that child is in itself a challenge. I had a student who had a very strong personality, short temper but loving heart. He LOVED space! During a difficult moment one day, I got to his level and shared some supportive and kind words with him and he was able to calm down. Later I found out that he no longer wanted to be an astronaut but rather a teacher like me because he wanted to help others like I helped him!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would upgrade a few things in my classroom for sure! I would treat my instructional aides to a nice dinner and small token of appreciation to thank them for all they do in our classroom and for the students. They are a true blessing! I would pay off bills. With whatever is left, I would use towards a vacation with my family as a thank you for all their support!
