Life is exceptionally difficult, as I have found out the hard way, even more so without the support of others. I work to counter this.

Learn MoreI had a particularly terrible experience in schools regarding academic and emotional support, but the few teachers that did support me in the right ways inspired to become the person I needed while I was growing up. It wouldn't be until the later years of my non-traditional college experience at my 27 years of age that I would decide to become a teacher. I also have several relatives who are teachers in several countries from whom I learned a myriad of things about what is needed in the world.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI taught Algebra 1 for 4 years and had several students that had trouble multiplying, nevermind manipulating equations and graphing. Throughout the year I managed to change the mindset they had, which stemmed from previous experiences with math teachers, to one where they felt capable of success and they managed to not only pass their state test but achieve mastery on it despite never before passing a state test. The main thing was helping them learn that they can do it on their own.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would ensure I have everything I need in my classroom for my students to feel safe and capable of meeting their own needs. There are too mnay things my students need, particularly as my school is around 80% Title 1. I would also use the money to ensure my family's economic safety which I'm sure everyone can relate to during these turbulent and uncertain times. I wish us all the best :(
