Michael D. Sewell, my mentor and late PHSC band director, inspired me with a quote: “Time is the most valuable thing a person can give.”

Learn MoreFrom the inspiration of my high school band director, to a love of music, to a love of passing on the knowledge that is within me, I believe that it is my calling to educate the future generations by being a music educator and giving back as much as I can to the community, students, familes and staff in the area in which I work. I teach music so that students will be able to become lifelong musicians and one day, pass on the knowledge that was shared with them.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceIn my 3rd year of teaching in a low-socioeconomic community with negligent at-home inspiration or support, I always implored my students to find the joy in what they did. During a rehearsal of Psalm 42 by Samuel Hazo, after I had cut off the ensemble, I noticed one of my saxophonists crying. She was a sophomore student who had just lost her parent and had stated that the piece brought her tears of joy in sparking a memory of her father. The power of music became apparent to me in that moment.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would take all $25,000.00 and pay for my wife's cancer treatment and medications.
