Danielle Simon

I love teaching because I get to be the teacher that I needed when I was a kid. I want to teach kids that THEY can make a difference, too.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I've always known that I've wanted to be a teacher, but my reasoning changed as I grew older. We, as adults, often forget that students are people first, and students second. They have past experiences, trauma, and diverse perspectives that should be acknowledged when trying to create a safe learning environment where kids actually WANT to be. I became a teacher to give kids the grace that I needed while growing up, and to ensure that school can be safe and fun for all.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The impact teachers can have outside of the classroom is just as important as making a difference inside of the classroom. My most memorable teaching experience is when I attended my student's baptism. She had no family, other than her dad, in the United States. She said "Ms. Simon, I would really like some family there. Can you come?" It was my first year, and in that moment, I realized that I was more than just a teacher to my students. I am family, a mentor, and a safe space.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000, I would use it to pay off my student loans and reclaim a piece of myself. Although I love teaching and it is my whole world, the financial strain doesn't reflect my efforts as a teacher. I put my heart and soul into teaching and I show up and show out for my students in every way. It would mean a lot if the financial burden could be relieved so that I could get back to what I love doing the most: teaching and supporting students.
