My zip code said Black girls from the Bronx couldn't be scientists. I love teaching STEM so my students know they absolutely can.

Learn MoreI became a teacher to challenge the limits my neighborhood placed on me. Growing up in the Bronx, STEM opportunities were concentrated in better-resourced schools with greater course diversity and comprehensive afterschool programs. This access often felt out of reach for me. However, teaching STEM lets me rewrite that narrative daily so my students see that STEM belongs to them too.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of my most memorable moments was introducing a student to my steel drum, an instrument he had never seen or heard before. In a single session, he learned to play “Jingle Bells,” then insisted on mastering the entire song purely out of curiosity and joy. Watching him discover a new sound, skill, and confidence reminded me why I teach. When students gain access to new worlds like music, robotics, or science, they begin to see the endless possibilities waiting for them.
What would you do with the $25,000?If I won $25,000, I would reinvest it into expanding access to music and STEM for my students. Our drumming students currently learn West African djembe techniques on buckets, so I would purchase authentic djembes to grow our music program. I would also strengthen robotics with more coding and computer science opportunities. Lastly, I’d expand our classroom library with STEM titles to nurture joy in science and nonfiction reading.
