I became a special education teacher because building strong, trusting relationships with my students is the most meaningful part of my work. I believe connection is the foundation of success. I have had students with selective mutism grow comfortable communicating in my supportive environment, and students with significant behavioral challenges make tremendous progress in self-regulation through consistent routines and relationship-building.

One of my most memorable experiences as a special education teacher is seeing the growth my students make throughout the school year. Many begin the year in my classroom full time, but with structure, clear expectations, and a supportive environment, they gradually transition into the general education setting. Some of my students eventually participate full time, learning and growing alongside their peers in an inclusive classroom.

Many of my students rely on the resources we provide to meet their basic needs. I would use these funds to purchase food, clothing, and hygiene products to ensure they feel comfortable to learn each day. I would invest in toys and academic supplies to enhance our classroom, as my students deserve quality opportunities to succeed. If any funds remain, I would put them toward my continued education in school psychology to further strengthen my ability to support my students’ overall development.
