Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because helping others learn and grow has always felt like a natural part of who I am. My time in healthcare, supporting children and adults with disabilities, showed me the power of guidance, patience, and tailored support. After a work injury shifted my path, I returned to my passion for education where I could empower students, provide extra support, and make a real, positive difference every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was at a Noho Marae in New Zealand, visiting the urupā. A student shared the story of an ancestor buried there, explaining its history and significance. Watching the group listen respectfully, I realized the students had become the teachers. It reminded me that the most powerful learning happens when we honor culture, listen deeply, and let students lead with their own knowledge and identity.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I would use it to continue bringing meaningful, inclusive learning experiences to children across different communities. Drawing from my teaching experiences in both Canada and New Zealand, I would invest in resources and opportunities that support creativity, cultural connection, and emotional well-being. My goal is simple: to help every child feel seen, supported, and inspired to learn.
