Tell us why you became a teacher

I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the world. I wanted to be the one person that kids could look up to and count on in their lives especially if they don't have anyone like that at home. I also love teaching science and being able to help kids learn by using their hands. My students love doing STEM activities. Some students don't learn in the traditional style of teaching, but when they are able to be hands on, you really see the lightbulbs go off inside.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of the most memorable teaching experiences I had was when I taught 5th grade. One quality I have as a teacher is the ability to develop great relationships with students. There was an incoming student that year who had struggled academically and behaviorally. After weeks of showing that student how much I cared about them, their interests, and wanting them to succeed that student completely turned his elementary career around and did amazing things later on in high school.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000 prize, I would first invest some of the money back into my classroom for my students. I would be able to purchase more STEM activities and experiments that go with my standards/curriculum. Next, I would invest some of the money into my elementary school I work at. There are many repairs and updates that need to be done and I would love to help. Lastly, I would donate the rest of the money back into my community to help those in need.
