I'm an immigrant who came at a very young age & had a difficult time with identity & belonging. Growing up low-income & undocumented shaped my purpose. In high school I translated & tutored Spanish speaking students, that's when I knew I had a bigger purpose in helping students navigate education. In college, I discovered how powerful it is to connect culture, social/env. justice into academic learning. I knew I wanted to be an educator where students feel safe, loved, challenged & joyful.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable experience was seeing growth in my kiddos who struggled academically. As a 4th grade teacher I had students entering at k-1st level. Over time, with small group support, encouraging productive struggle, embracing a growth mindset, providing encouragement&high expectations they began to grow confidence in themselves. Seeing the shift from self doubt to confidence was a reminder that teaching isn't just about academics,its about helping them believe in who they are & can become.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would fund meaningful field experiences that connect to my students & voices in my local town. It would be amazing to partner with local leaders, artists, & organizations to create service learning projects and real world learning rooted in our community. I want my students to see that where they come from is rich with history, brilliance, and opportunity. It would also be amazing to provide an afterschool or summer tutoring support at our school for students who are struggling.
