Tell us why you became a teacher

I was a stressful student for all of my teachers. My nick name from my dad and family used to be “problem child,” like the movie. I had an elementary teacher who made me feel seen. I also had a Sunday School teacher who was also unconditional in love.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A former student of mine- now deceased due to gun violence- came to me. He vented on his anger regarding losing his mother to drugs and gang violence. He also depicted his resiliency through graphic storytelling. He vented about his twin brothet being in juvenile detention, and his eldest brother being in jail. He became vulnerable and the tears began to flow, like a stream. I learned to be receptive and my judgmental mindset almost immediately shifted. I became more than a scientist.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would make my classroom a full on AVID classroom! I would purchase necessary supplies, like headphones and lab supplies that I have constantly pleaded for! I would subscribe to scientific magazines and Brainpop! I would purchase extra uniforms and basic needs for my 7th graders!
