Claudia I Chávez

My students walk in the classroom without knowing numbers and letters/sounds. Seeing them grow and learn them is what I love about teaching.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I have my degree in Bachelors of Social Work. When I graduated I worked at an elementary as a social work. Worked with low income families and had the chance to work with kids giving them counseling and making sure they were getting assistance academically when they needed it. I decided to get my Alternative Certification in Teaching. Working with low income student has made me realize that kids need an opportunity to learn in order for them to progress in life.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have many memories in my teaching experience. Seeing all my former students graduate High School and going to college. Seeing the high school senior walk the elementary school and looking at my former students make my heart content. Last year I had a student that didn’t know letters and sounds not numbers. Working with him during small group everyday helped him. He left PK bowing how to read sight and cvc words.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My mom had a stroke November 2023. Because she owns a home and recieves my dad’s social Security, she doesn’t qualify for Medicare and medical assistance or home care. I would use the money to hire someone to help care for my mom without my mom having to use her own money to pay. My siblings and I take care of my mom, however it’s hard to manage our own kids, family and work. I would buy a new car because, mine has a lot of mechanical problems. I would also pay for my sons college.
