Tell us why you became a teacher

Teaching is more than a career; it is a commitment to the future. I became an educator to share my passion for lifelong learning with younger generations, sparking the same curiosity that drives me. I am dedicated to encouraging every student to reach their full potential, providing the support they need to overcome challenges. Ultimately, I want to help students grow into empathetic, capable adults who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to our global society.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In 2009, I taught a student entrenched in gang life. I once caught him mapping on the back of a handout—not as a distraction, but to plot a safe route home to avoid being jumped. The weight of his reality hit me: survival was his prerequisite for learning. I gave him five minutes to finish his map before starting my lesson. That small nod to his humanity changed everything. His grades and participation soared because, for once, someone saw the war he was fighting just to reach his desk.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would first silence the weight of debt following my husband’s TBI accident, allowing our family to finally breathe. In my classroom, I’d replace outdated materials with vibrant novel sets and essential supplies to spark a true love for reading. Finally, I’d continue to invest in my children’s ongoing educational journeys. This isn’t just an award; it’s a chance to restore my home's peace, empower my students, and secure the path ahead for my kids.
