Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of one who made me feel seen, safe, and loved. Now I teach at the same Title 1 school, where students carry more than backpacks; they carry life. I don’t just teach; I build independence, confidence, resilience, and hope. I create a classroom where every child believes in themselves and their future is bigger than their circumstances. I teach to be the person my students need—just like my kindergarten teacher still is for me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A new Hispanic student arrived shy, alone, and struggling with English. Day by day, we practiced and celebrated small wins. Months later, they raised their hand, answered in broken English, and smiled. In that moment, we both knew—they were going to be okay. I realized I had learned more from them than they could ever learn from me. That moment reminded me why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I’d invest it in my school, students, and classroom. I’d buy books and materials to make learning accessible to all. I’d also provide essentials many students lack at home: food, hygiene items, and basic supplies. Every child should feel loved, supported, cared for, and ready to succeed.
