Tell us why you became a teacher

I always thought I became a teacher because I could make a real change and have a positive, meaningful impact on my students; however, I have realized that my students have impacted me more than I ever could have imagined. I have been changed in the most meaningful and amazing ways. I have been teaching for over 20 years, and each student left me forever better and helped me be a better teacher. My kids rock, and getting to see them grow and take on the world has been a blessing and pleasure.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Opening 5 new schools over 20 years. To be the first to start the traditions and culture at a school has been truly rewarding. You watch students enter the school wide-eyed and eager to begin a new adventure. They want you to help them create a school they can be proud of. Each of my schools has given me joy; however, getting to teach my kindergarten students once again in high school remains the most amazing gift. I started them out with ABC's and then got to help them get their diplomas. JOY!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Use it for our new home. We are now empty nesters and have started on a new journey in the Uptown Charlotte area, buying a newly built home. It needs lots of care to make it our home, and having this money would allow us to leave our nest egg alone. New blinds and a patio, built-ins, and needed furniture would finish off this home beautifully. I have amazing ideas, but would love the budget to match those ideas.I am eager to turn this new house into our forever home.
