Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted my students to see someone that looks like them, so that they can see what’s possible. I currently teach at my Alma mater and I chose this path because I wanted to give back to my past self.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A few years ago, I worked with a student had a lot of promise, but they lacked focus and skills for today’s world. After working with them in my class and watching their growth as they matriculated, they gave me a shoutout at graduation thanking me for my patience and expertise. I will always value that moment.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would equip my students with the tools they need to thrive in school including basic school supplies, but also a planner so they can keep track and have awareness of time. Additionally, I would arrange for them to take a field trip to a local museum so they can see art and the many stories of people. I would also like to put the money towards a mentoring program so that students will have a “buddy” throughout their time in school.
