Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up I had some amazing teachers who helped shape who I am today. To this day I remember their names and the impact they had on me. As I started my own family, I became so excited watching my own children learn. With the encouragement of my oldest son, I went back to school and found a love for teaching. I now hold a master's degree in special education and get excited every day to go to school.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A few years ago, I was in a middle school self-contained room. I had a little boy in the fifth grade who was not able to read. We worked one on one for weeks. One afternoon we picked up a simple book, and he read me the first few pages. I don't know who was more excited! He jumped up hugged me and said I did it. That moment reminded me that teaching isn’t just about delivering content—it’s about building trust, creating safe spaces, and believing in students before they believe in themselves.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My Husband passed away last May so I would be responsible and pay some bills. I would then take a trip with all three of my children for some much-needed time together. I would also buy books and supplies for my classroom. There are so many wonderful things out there.
