Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted students to feel safe, seen, and deeply valued—something I needed when I was in high school. I know what it feels like to walk into a classroom carrying more than anyone can see. I chose this profession to create the kind of space where students feel loved, supported, and reminded daily that they matter and are capable of rising beyond their circumstances.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was when a former student, whom I had taught years earlier, invited me to his college graduation. He told me I had let him lean on me when he needed it most and that my support helped him keep going. Knowing I made such a lasting difference reminded me that teaching is about more than lessons—it’s about hope, trust, and being there when students need someone to believe in them.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to pay medical bills from lifelong cancer treatment, as my current diagnosis requires ongoing care for the rest of my life. Managing permanent treatment while continuing to teach has required resilience and sacrifice. This support would ease that financial burden and help me secure reliable transportation, ensuring I can keep showing up fully for my students each day.
