Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a middle school science teacher because I remember being in 7th grade and not really liking science, and thinking it was kinda boring. As I got older I discovered a passion for science. I wish that I would have been able to discover that passion at an earlier time, like in middle school. So for me, I try to create a classroom that is a safe space for my students to ask questions, critically think, challenge themselves and allow students to engage with science in investigative ways.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience is receiving a letter from a former student. This student struggled being accepted for who they are from their family. Their letter expressed to me how grateful they were to have someone that didn’t judge them, for accepting them for who they are, and thanked me for being their teacher. This was a very rewarding moment for me in that I helped them beyond just learning science content by making them feel like they belonged.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won the $25,000 I would feel so incredibly grateful! Honestly, most of that money I would use for savings to help me start a family. However, I would want to use a portion to give back to my school community. Whether it be donating supplies, funding a field trip to the science museum or zoo, or buying new lab equipment for the science department. I would want to work with my administrators to identify areas of need.
