Tell us why you became a teacher

I went to college not knowing exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up, or if I wanted to grow up. I felt opportunities for women in 1979 to 1983 when I graduated were limited to teaching, or secretarial, or MRS. Degree. Teaching was the best option. I did my student teaching and decided, NOPE, I'm heading to grad. school at the University of Illinois to create my own career path as a Wellness/Fitness guru. Many job paths later; Teaching is really were God wants me to be.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience came during my first 6 months of "real teaching", as opposed to "fake teaching" which is what it feels like when you are being a stay at home mother raising your biological children. I was teaching freshmen Biology as the special education component with a general education co-teacher in an inclusion setting. One of my students who happened to be a standout freshman basketball player on the Varsity team, chose me as his Educator Appreciation Night honoree.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Oh my, so many worthy causes and places to share this $25,000 blessing with. It would most likely be going to the Environmental Science classes to improve and enhance our STEM opportunities. Helping students to become life long learners is always my overarching goal. This type of gift can plant lots of seeds for potential growth!
