Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to build meaningful relationships with students and make positive connections that extend beyond the classroom and curriculum. My goal has always been that if a student can take even one thing they learned in my class and apply it to life outside of school, then I have accomplished my mission. The most rewarding moments have been seeing the “light bulb” turn on— turn on—when students understand and gain confidence.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most meaningful moments in my 25 years of teaching are when former students return and share how something they learned in my class helped them later in life. Hearing that a lesson, skill, or piece of encouragement stayed with them reminds me that teaching goes far beyond the classroom. Knowing I played even a small role in their growth and success makes this profession truly rewarding.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would invest in books for my classroom and school library. Books open doors to adventures, cultures, and experiences many of my students might never otherwise have the chance to explore. Providing a wide range of engaging stories and informational texts would help spark curiosity, build literacy, and allow every student to see themselves—and the world—through reading.
