Tell us why you became a teacher

​I became a teacher by a beautiful accident of fate. As a shy child, I spent my evenings helping my mother grade papers, never dreaming I’d one day lead my own classroom. While I didn't choose the path initially, I chose to stay for my students. In a world that can be unpredictable, I am committed to being a consistent, stable pillar for minority learners. My mission is to ensure they recognize their own immense potential and the incredible future the world has in store for them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable student was, let's call him, AJ. Known for aggressive behavior and home challenges, he was the child most avoided. I refused to give up. Through relentless interventions and emotional support, we peeled back the layers of his anger. The "cringe-worthy" student transformed into a high-honor star, eventually earning admission into a prestigious high school. Seeing him realize his potential—going from failing to flourishing—is the greatest testament to why I choose to stay.

What would you do with the $25,000?

After 21 years of prioritizing my students' needs, I have often neglected my own. This $25,000 would allow me to finally invest in myself by repairing my home and creating a dedicated, organized home office. Moving my workspace from the dining table to a professional sanctuary would provide the stability and rest I need to continue giving my best to my students. This prize isn't just a gift; it’s the "recharge" I need to sustain my passion for the next decade of teaching.
