I love meeting my scholars where they are and helping them follow their dreams. Every scholar knows they have a cheerleader in me, for life.

I was born a teacher and my baby brother was my first student. I wanted to be everything when I was little! I wanted to be a scientist, an artist, an envelope maker, a writer… and by becoming a teacher, I get to do that every day! I also love children’s enthusiasm for learning and constant curiosity. After 24 years teaching overseas and Peace Corps service, teaching in Indianapolis revealed my passion for urban education. Now I’m enrolled in the New Leaders program to become a principal.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne classroom on a small island in Vanuatu taught me more about teaching than most. I was there to work with local teachers. One taught a lesson on different types of coral. He opened the textbook and copied 3 pictures of coral on the board, while the children remained silent. Then he asked the students to copy the pictures. All the while, the seashore-where those 3 types of coral lay in plain view- was only about 100 yards from the classroom. He had followed procedure, but missed opportunity.
What would you do with the $25,000?With $25,000 I would pay some debt I owe to my mom so she can keep doing what she loves. She’s been helping support my 3 sons and me. I would continue buying snacks for my scholars each week. I buy fruit for the morning and crackers or popcorn for mid-morning. It’s about $80 a week. But I’ve promised them a McDonald’s lunch before the end of school, so I’d have that covered too. Finally, I would take my youngest son back to visit Vanuatu where he grew up and I lived since Peace Corps.
