Tell us why you became a teacher

At 14 I volunteered with an inner city summer camp where I discovered my ability to relate to young people. I thought I would be spending the summer earning volunteer hours, but then I discovered the impact a positive role model could have on children who have difficult home lives. These kids filled my heart with purpose and gave me direction in life. Now I strive to create a classroom full of love, compassion and safety for all students, because some children only feel at school.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Two years ago I was out in the parking lot running valet and directing traffic as usual. Suddenly a very tall man got out of his car and ran through traffic to me. He had the biggest smile when he got to me and said, "Miss Candy?! Can I hug you?! I always wondered what happened to you." He was one of my first preschool students and here he stood over 6 feet tall with the same smile. His son was at our school and he said I was still His favorite teacher he ever had. Melted my heart.

What would you do with the $25,000?

For school: I would put some astroturf on our playground as it is currently just a parking lot, and create a naturally inspired creative space on the side of the building where students can explore nature. Currently I spend about $1200 a year on supplies to meet the needs of my students, but I also, often send things home (like books in home languages, toothbrushes, shoes, etc.) I would pay off student loan debt as well.
