Byron King Jr.

I teach 7th grade. They are hilarious people and helping them figure it out and thrive at that weird age is more rewarding than anything.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I kind of just fell into becoming a teacher. I think it's because I always had great teachers and mentors around me, from my parents and peers to the educators I've encountered throughout my learning experience. A few years after I graduated from college, I moved to Japan and kind of had to teach myself how to teach and in the process I realized I how much fun I was having and that I was good at it. It just fit, so here I am.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I wasn't having the best day, but an 8th grader pulled me aside after diagnostic benchmark tests, thanked me, and told me I was the reason she was now on grade-level. The previous year we'd sat down and planned a "video game skill tree" for her goals and aspirations. It was just a stick figure doodle with branches, but she kept it and followed it. I forgot, but she didn't and when the results came in she told me. Time stopped,my heart grew three sizes, and the pride... I couldn't stop smiling.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With that money, I would immediately kill some debt that's been prolonging the fruition of some dreams of mine. I'd invest some, save some, and take a vacay to Japan to give gifts and reconnect with all of the people who really showed me love and helped me grow. I can't even describe the depth of gratitude I feel for those people. They kept me safe. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world and I'd love to show some love in return by showing up with (as the kids say) PEAK omiyage.
