Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to empower young people with the skills of inquiry and scholarship and to help them support their ideas with a strong academic foundation. I love seeing students collaborate and learn from one another about content and social-emotional development and helping them make connections as individuals and across disciplines. There is no triumph greater than when I see my students take an interest in new skills, topics, and approaches as well as in one another and their environment.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience has been collaborating with my faculty peers. This includes our Capstone Symposium across several campuses for our seniors in which they showcase their research projects as well as in our Interdisciplinary Week when faculty work together to teach students in grades 9-11 to synthesize concepts and present new understandings. This past Halloween, my homeroom constructed an elaborate Krustyland door theme which attracted many participants outside of our class.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest it in a school library. While my school has some access to digital archives, such as JSTOR, there is no academically enriching experience greater than engaging with a room full of books, fiction and non-fiction, and investigating new ideas from material sources. Currently, we have a few book cases under our main stairwell and students find comfort there with a new book before class or during lunch. They would discover new worlds of creativity and scholarship with a robust library.
