Tell us why you became a teacher

In middle school, we had “teacher for a day” where we could sign up and be a teacher all day. I chose my math class and fell in love. My journey to be a teacher though took a longer path than others. Out of high school, I became a surgical technologist for 10 years then started teaching college courses for that… that’s when I remembered my love of teaching and went back to school. I’ve been a middle school math teacher for nine years now. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience would have to be this last May when I had seniors tell me they continued their math journey because of my teaching and passion for math. One even told me he took a self guided Pre-Calc course and passed due to my teaching.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000 I would spend $5000 on my classroom making sure I had all the hands-on materials I need. I would donate 10% to my favorite Honduras school charity, 10% to my church, 5% to start a savings account for my classroom snacks and then the rest would pay off debt and vacation to Ireland and Scotland.
