Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because my passion is people! I’ve always loved music and connected with my teachers. In high school, I found myself striving to be in positions where I could be helpful and knowledgeable about how the choir works; I would organize uniforms, help pick out music, tutor younger students. I have always had the heart for teaching, and now that I’m here I know I’m in the right field. These kids are so incredible and capable and I want to play a part in helping them believe it!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was when I was teaching kindergarten a few years ago. I would play these little warm-up games and they would sneak closer to me and I would “catch” them. One day, when playing this game, I turned around and the whole class had quietly snuck right up and when I caught them they all hugged me. They almost knocked me over, but I looked down at their sweet little faces all laughing and giggling. It was such a sweet moment.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would put it towards getting my master’s degree. I want to be a master of music education and have the opportunity to create music content for schools of all backgrounds with all budgets. I want music to feel accessible and to help teachers create a space for young musicians to feel free and inspired.
