Briana Upshur

I love teaching my group of students because they remind me every day why purpose matters.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to give back to New Orleans. Although I earned my master’s degree in Criminal Justice, I realized many young people simply need guidance, support, and someone who believes in them. Teaching allows me to help students make better choices, see their potential, and create opportunities beyond their circumstances.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Seeing my students graduate is my most memorable teaching experience. Watching them overcome challenges, grow in confidence, and reach a milestone many once thought was impossible reminds me why I became a teacher. In that moment, I know the guidance, patience, and support we shared truly made a difference in their lives.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I had $25,000 for my class, I would create real-world learning experiences for my students. Many of them have never had opportunities outside of New Orleans, so I would organize an educational trip that allows them to travel, explore new environments, and connect classroom lessons to real life. The experience would include college visits, cultural sites, and career exposure to help them see possibilities beyond their current surroundings.
