I became a teacher because I had the best teachers. They showed me what I was capable of doing at a time when I didn’t think I would amount to anything. Now, as an autistic teacher, I strive to be an example for everyone of who a genuine and effective teacher should look like, and how we need to give all students a chance to succeed but especially those who have learning disabilities, mental health issues, and unfortunate circumstances. I use my experience to enlighten others of their own
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceA student I had suffered from an undiagnosed disorder, where they would forget where they were. I would help this student walk to class when they seemed confused, would work closely with them during writing tasks, and would often be the teacher they’d go to when upset. Throughout our time together, they made incredible strides in their art program, began to be a leader in our schools Gay-Straight-Alliance, and was able to find strategies to help their issues. I do this all for students like them
What would you do with the $25,000?Take my spouse on a dream vacation and get some of my student debt off my back! I’d also update my classroom to make it more comfortable for me and my students and have more resources for them for daily use
