Tell us why you became a teacher

I entered the profession as a former homeless student that needed the support and tutelage of educators when my life situation got complicated. Teachers have such an incredible ability to connect with and nurture students through all of life’s challenges. This is why I joined the field; to continue to perpetuate the impact I’ve received to the future generations.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’ve taught a diverse group of students in two of the most incredible schools. If I had to choose, difficult as it may be, I’ve had a student that is non-verbal especially around large groups. To communicate, I developed a journal system for us to communicate. After a year or so of doing this, the student began to make gestures and would laugh at my classroom jokes. One day she spoke to me and I couldn’t process what had happened fast enough to stop the tears that came. Most meaningful moment!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Pay off my student loans/debt. Retire my wife. Continue to teach and coach (doing what I love)!
