Betsy Koch

I love teaching because every day I get to spark curiosity, build confidence, and watch kids discover how powerful they really are.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of my younger brother. When my family adopted him from Vietnam, he didn’t speak any English. I was young, but sat with him nearly every day, sounding out words, labeling objects, and celebrating every small victory. Watching his confidence grow as language open the world to him changed me. I saw how patience and encouragement could transform fear into possibility and I knew I wanted to do that for others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable moment teaching was with a student who struggled at home. I read the book Wish by Barbara O’Connor to the class. As I read, he began making deep connections between the story and his own life. Afterward, he asked me to promise I would read that book to every class I ever teach. In that moment, I saw the healing power of stories and the trust he placed in me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I’d pack my bags and explore the world, wandering through museums, historic streets, vibrant markets and different countries. I’d collect stories, ideas, and inspiration everywhere I go. Then I’d bring that energy back to my classroom, turning lessons into adventures and helping my students see the world as bigger, brighter, and full of possibility.
