Beth Thomas

The thing I love most about working with my third graders is seeing them realize they can do hard things and push through to confidence.

Tell us why you became a teacher

My third grade teacher especially made an impression on me - we sang in class, worked with clay, baked brownies, and I felt seen. My 4th grade teacher was angry and bitter most of the time. I was determined to be a better teacher and take up positive space making a difference.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Some of the things kids have said to me over the years have been funny or stuck with me, but none so much as when former students see me and tell me they remember things I’ve said, stories I’ve told, or a difference I made for them. That really sticks with me. They are in my hearts as much as I am in some of theirs.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would pay off some debt, buy a few pricy items for my classroom and more books (I already have close to a thousand crammed in my classroom) and then take my 3 kids on a vacation somewhere we’ve never been and make a memory.
