Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher after discovering my passion for helping children learn and grow. My name is Bessie J. Thomas, a 6th grade science teacher. Though education wasn’t my first career, working with students changed my life. After leaving a night-shift factory job to care for my children, I volunteered at a preschool and found my purpose. I’ve worked with Pre-K–8th grade, including diverse learners. Teaching is my passion, and I love inspiring students every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was during a class discussion when a student unexpectedly used academic vocabulary and explained a scientific phenomenon. I did not expect that level of understanding. In that moment, I saw true growth and confidence. It reminded me that students are always learning, even when we don’t realize it, and that every teaching moment can lead to powerful and surprising outcomes.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I received the $25,000, I would use it to support both my family and my students. As a teacher in a Title I school, I often invest my own resources into my classroom. This opportunity would allow me to ease financial responsibilities at home while also continuing to provide meaningful learning experiences, supplies, and opportunities that directly benefit my students’ growth and success.
