Azya Pierce

Every time we try a new recipe, I love hearing the kids say they made it for their family at home.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because education has always been a meaningful part of my life and family. Growing up, I watched my mother dedicate over 40 years to teaching, inspiring countless students through her passion, patience, and commitment. Seeing the impact she made on young people showed me the powerful role educators play in shaping futures and building confidence in students. Her example instilled in me a deep respect for learning and a desire to make a difference in the same way.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments as a teacher was when several students told me they went home and made the potato wedges we prepared during our lab for their families. Hearing that they felt confident enough to cook on their own and share what they learned with their parents reminded me why teaching culinary skills matters. It showed me that learning extended beyond the classroom and into their homes, creating pride, independence, and real-life connections through food.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I would pay off some debt to create financial peace of mind and finally take a cruise vacation. I haven’t been able to travel in four years, so it would be a much-needed break.
