Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw how powerful a coach or educator can be in a young person’s life. Sports and physical education shaped who I am - they taught me discipline, resilience, and how to lead. I wanted to be that steady presence for students. As a PE teacher and varsity soccer coach, I get to impact kids who thrive in the classroom and those who struggle, helping them build confidence in a different way.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moments happen each year around May. I usually take 5-6 adapted physical education students to the annual SUNY Cortland Adapted Olympiad. The joy expressed by the students during this event is something that cannot be summed up in words. Their smiles and excitement make my entire year. It’s like, instantly - they believe in themselves. These moments remind me that PE isn’t always about sports; it’s about helping kids find confidence they didn’t know they had.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest in updated equipment to create a more engaging and modern PE experience for my students. Quality equipment allows us to teach more effectively and reach more learning styles. I would also use part of the funds to remove financial barriers for students from all backgrounds - helping cover fees, gear, and opportunities so every child has an equal chance to participate, grow, and succeed.
