Tell us why you became a teacher

Becoming a teacher was really a “change of life” decision for me. Before, I worked as a television news producer. That was a fantastic experience, and I was a part of some major world events, but it took me away from my family. So I made the change, and I’ve never looked back. Working with my students every day is just fulfilling. I have fun from period 1 to period 9 every day. I have two kids of my own, but I tell my students that they’re my school kids. They’re my family.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The class of 2019 holds a special place in my heart. They were participating in a statewide safe driving competition. The goal was to create a campaign that educated other teens about safe driving practices. They worked tirelessly to get their message across. They worked together, and got others not in the class involved too. The student body, staff, and even the local police department were all a part of it. I was so proud of how they worked as a team, set a goal, and put it into action.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I think first, I would pay off a little debt. Then, my daughter is getting her doctorate and my son is graduating college, so I would take my family on a west coast and Hawaiian vacation. After that, I would donate a nice amount to my school. Particularly the TV/STEM and athletic departments. Teaching my TV classes and working with the athletic department are so important and enjoyable to me, I’d like to help them make some improvements for all the students now and in the future.
