Learn MoreI became a teacher to become the safe adult for kids that I needed. While I am passionate about spreading the Spanish language, my heritage, and Spanish-speaking culture, the content of my work matters less to me than the social-emotional impact I leave. Being a kid is hard; you're often overlooked, insecure, confused, and just need someone to see you, hear you, guide you, and validate you. I'm honored to get to do that for my kids.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceThere are so many! Laughing with my kids every day is what floods my mind. The most memorable experiences for me are when kids feel comfortable enough in our classroom to take risks. Some are shy, some are labeled "problem" kids, some struggle academically, and when you get to see them overcome their fears of speaking, making mistakes, or being judged it is a beautiful thing to see them confident and with a sense of belonging.
What would you do with the $25,000?I will give a $5,000 donation to the Communities in Schools organization my school partners with to meet low-income students' needs which could include food, school supplies, clothes, and other essentials. I will use the remaining $20,000 to pay off my student loans. What a blessing!
