I planned to be a scientist, not a teacher. A love of adventure led me to join the Peace Corps where I taught science in Lesotho, Southern Africa. With few resources, I learned to design creative, engaging lessons that helped students succeed. Their success inspired me to pursue teaching as a career. I chose middle school because it is when many students, especially girls, begin to lose interest in science. My goal is to help all students discover the excitement and possibilities of science

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After 23 years, I have many amazing memories. like watching students debate the science in the movie Gravity to inspiring future physicists on field trips to Fermilab. The most meaningful memory was a 2019 alternative energy project. Students studied school blueprints, consulted engineers, and community leaders to design solutions to reduce district energy costs. Students successfully presented their proposal to the school board, and the pride on their faces made the experience unforgettable.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning $25,000 would allow me to build a greenhouse and outdoor learning center, expanding hands-on gardening and science opportunities. Students would explore plant science, conduct investigations, and grow food year-round while connecting classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges. This space would help students make connections between classroom learning and real-world environmental challenges.
