Tell us why you became a teacher

Honestly, I became a teacher to have a school schedule. As a single Mom, I needed a snow day when my kids had a snow day. I went back to college and started at Adult Education. Once I started helping students achieve their dreams, I was totally hooked. I've helped thousands of students get their high school diploma or succeed in college. I realize their success is my success. Each year, I attend several graduations and family parties to enjoy my students' successes.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It is difficult to sum up years of teaching into one moment or experience, but the moments when my students teach me, enlighten me, or make me realize the power kindness are etched forever in my soul. There is a quiet, warm glow inside me when I am recognized out in public, "Teacher, teacher!" Years after these adults were my students, they seek me out to share their successes. As an adult educator, I strive to weave a tight fabric of opportunities & kindness.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I continuously give to my students and my school. I teach a cooking class for teenagers and I buy all the food. Most of my teenage students do not have what they need, so I buy the boots, jackets, gloves, and anything else they need. I started a food pantry & clothing center at our school because no one can learn if they are hungry or cold. I would apply some of the money to my student loans! I would also invest a little into retirement.
