Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up in the most diverse city in America made me passionate about understanding different cultures. I looked up to teachers who empowered all students, no matter their background. I’ve dedicated myself to learning the history of our country to better understand and advocate for social change. My classroom is a safe space for all students, where they can grab a book from the little free library, grab a snack from the free food pantry, and discuss all viewpoints.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite teaching memory is using candy to teach the difference between economic systems. My international students from 7 different countries all could play together because they knew rock, paper, scissors. The visuals made concepts easy to understand for my English language learners. One of my students from Afghanistan was so happy to be learning after schools for girls were closed in her country.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With 25,000, I’d love to further fund the food pantry in my classroom and the little free library. Food insecurity is a growing concern in America. Anything left over I could use to pay for my small, upcoming wedding to the love of my life!
