Tell us why you became a teacher

I am still completing my certification to become a teacher in an alternative teaching program. It’s been a journey and I decided to do it because it is so rewarding to be with children and to be closer to my own kids. It’s amazing to watch their growth directly and be a part of change and educating young minds. My grandma was also a teacher and I wanted to follow in her footsteps.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of the most memorable teaching experiences was from one of my more difficult students. He struggles with ADD and also his siblings are dyslexic and he also still struggles with reading. I try and be very patient and redirect him but many times he falls short or kids make comments about his high energy level or his lack of attention. I know he feels bad but he tries. This week he told me he was happy he was in my class and brought me a small gift. I can see his effort and desire to improve.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would put it towards new materials for the classroom for my bilingual students. Many of them need English support still and better materials and supplies would be helpful. We are a small school so any little bit helps especially with art supplies or even backpacks as some come from low income families. I love my students and I would also donate some to the school and the bilingual program which has my heart.
