Tell us why you became a teacher

My degree was counseling. I said I would NEVER teach. I watched my mom work hard & long teaching. I tutored kids growing up and everyone said-You will be a teacher just like your mom. You’re so creative in how you approach learning. When my first born entered K4, I started subbing in her school. The teachers all said they needed me to TEACH not sub. Principal hired me. That was 29 years ago. I moved around. I’ve tried to retire, to work part time but I always go back! Can’t imagine not teaching!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I begged a principal not to give me a student that wore headphones and hated noise! I thought he would hate my class. I am loud and animated. I felt I was the wrong teacher for him. I taught 3rd grade at ESE school. Noah was autistic. Rarely talked to anyone. We became fast buddies when I took an interest in his favorite F150 trucks. He no longer needed his headphones. He made friends with classmates. Ended the year as a STAR student.Now 13 yrs later he is driving a F150 and we are still buds.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With a small amount of money I would go on a 40th anniversary trip. (Maybe to Greece) With the rest-I would save for RETIREMENT. That is, if I ever decide to quit or technology forces me out. There are not many 63 year old teachers still finding the joy in hanging with a class of students, but I sure do!!!
