Alyssa Tamayo

I love teaching because of the countless lives that I get to impact. The relationships I build with my students are the greatest reward.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I realized I loved watching the lightbulb turn on and how students’ eyes light up when they learn something new and exciting. I also am a firm believer in the importance of education. Knowledge is a super power!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience was teaching refugee students from Afghanistan. For 3 years I worked to help my students learn not only core content, but also how to navigate a new language, culture, and country that is very different from their own. Helping my students acclimate and grow more confident in their new surroundings was extremely rewarding.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would pour the money back into my school and community! I would discuss the most pressing needs with my admin to make sure we get the most use out of it and better our campus for all of our students! In my own classroom, I would love to use the funds for STEM related learning tools: 3D printers, robots, and even consumable materials to helps foster hands-on STEM learning. Also, I would love to purchase high quality equipment for my student-led Broadcast club.
