Learn MoreI initially planned to become a speech-language pathologist to help students like my nephew who struggled to communicate and manage behavior. Seeing the impact teachers had on his growth inspired me to switch my major to special education. While in school, I worked as a paraprofessional for a young man with cognitive disabilities. Supporting his learning and celebrating his progress showed me that helping students with diverse needs is not just a career for me—it’s my purpose.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceWorking with a kindergarten student with significant behavioral needs was a defining moment in my career. When my school considered moving him to an intensive program, I asked for the chance to work with him. With trust from his family and dedication from both of us, he made remarkable progress. I shared “The Star Thrower” by Loren Eiseley with him, and he proudly called himself my “starfish.” His parents later recognized me as his “Shero,” reminding me never to give up on my students.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use the $25,000 to provide my students with experiences they might not otherwise have due to cognitive and economic barriers. Field trips would allow them to explore the community, build friendships, and discover their potential. I would also invite guest speakers to share their talents and inspire them. Additionally, I would create a student-run snack cart to teach responsibility, teamwork, and community service while building real-world life skills.
