Alycia Williams

My love for teaching comes from the reward I get after the students return and tell me how much my class prepared them for success.

Tell us why you became a teacher

In high school we had amazing educators. Predominantly black men and women. But they were more than just our teachers, they were our guidance counselors, they pushed us to the limit, they opened our eyes, to opportunities and new and different ways of doing things, and in my immature mind as a high school student I realized I am who I am today because of them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I recall my first year teaching Night and Farwell to Manzanar. My students had never heard of either of the memoirs and they only knew a little bit about the Holocaust. We did a study of both and there was so much discussion that took place in that classroom for one semester that changed their mindset on what really should be taught in our schools.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I was blessed to win, the first thing I would do would be to give to my church because we have a school, the second thing would be to do something nice for the students at my school, I would like to provide additional things that they can use with their tablets which will aid in their learning.
