Tell us why you became a teacher

My first memory of wanting to be a teacher starts in elementary school. As a kid, I wanted to be just like my favorite teachers and inspire others to learn like they inspired me. The goal solidified in high school as I volunteered to tutor students learning English as a second language. I could feel the importance and impact of a career in teaching as I watched those first lightbulb moments when a student finally understands and learns something they have been practicing for so long.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The learning experiences that I have created are some of my favorite memories. From book tasting and basketball brackets to help students find a book they love to Jurassic Park jungle to wrap up learning about ecosystems, creating an immersive experience where students really buy in and engage with their learning have brought me the most joy. Connections and creating a safe space for my students to be themselves is something I am proud of and I won't forget their notes of gratitude for that.

What would you do with the $25,000?

First, I would sponsor a One School, One Book reading program so each student would get the same book they can read with their family. This program combines encouraging family connections and fostering a love of reading which are two of my top priorities as an educator. I would also love to invite an author to speak at my school and share their love of books as well. Then I would take my family on a much deserved vacation for always being so patient with the time I dedicate to my job.
