Alexandra Juzwiak

As a daughter of immigrants, I taught my family English, while they taught me Polish. This exchange led me to fall in love with education.

Tell us why you became a teacher

There was a lack of diversity where I went to school. There were few bilingual teachers that understood first generation citizenship. I was scared of grammar, spelling, pronunciation and homework. I express my culture everywhere I go. I work to create a safe haven where students are encouraged to comfortably share their experiences; where trust exists. In doing so, I go out of my comfort zone to learn how to teach, coach, direct, write, volunteer, parent and even self-publish (without AI).

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I recently became a mother, but I have accidentally been called "mom" throughout my career. My memorable experience was volunteering in Africa. Students would share and maximize their resources as there were not enough for everyone. One pen was shared among several. A pole was used to represent a basketball hoop. I taught daycare, elementary and middle school settings. I left for this trip as an elementary school teacher in America. I came back as a middle school one with a new perspective.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My motive for winning America's Favorite Teacher is mainly having Bill Nye visit our school. However, if I receive 25,000 I would like to help fund the costs of inclusive playgrounds for all students, including any age, disabilities and socioeconomic status. It is important that students have access to locations where they can relieve stress, play and feel confident. Additionally, I would use the fund to kick-start my writing career with hopes of getting traditionally published one day.
