I became a teacher because of Mr. Avalos, my high school history teacher. His passion for history, fun classroom environment, and the way he would form strong relationships with his students by listening and speaking with them really showed me what it takes to be a teacher. He had a really strong impact on me and my classmates and I try to emulate that very day in my classroom. My goal is to help kids learn history, but I like to let them know they got someone rooting for them along the way.

My most memorable teaching experience involves a student named Carlos. In the classroom he was a challenging student. When the next year rolled around, Carlos decided to join the swim team and I had the opportunity to be his assistant coach. Things were awkward at first, but eventually we were able to form a strong bond over a sport we both knew nothing about. The first time he called me “Coach” I felt my heart grow like the Grinch. Carlos and I now work together volunteering afterschool.

As a single income household with two kids, it’s been hard to make ends meet at times. This money would be used to build a better future for my kids. I would use some of the money to pay off debts and put out small fires (car repairs, medical bills, etc.). I would use the rest to contribute to my family’s rainy day fund and as a down payment for a home.
